Lammergeier Battleship Upgrade by TranquilRuins Lammergeier Battleship Upgrade by TranquilRuins
This newer Lammergeier Battleship version was updated for the CCP starship competition but wasn't chosen in the end.

Well bugger me, oh well - I could have done with the money (no job) but it was a long shot. Still I'm happy I made the ship, it was commented on the EVE Online forums that it may of been too similar to the Drake - that may be deemed as so but I take that as a compliment :)

Still the ships picked, for the most part, are good! Good fortune to the semi-finalists :)

I fail to see much resemblance to the Drake (not that that is bad). Maybe the only similar thing is the slanted engines/wings? Personally I'd choose this over the Drake any day of the week, and I happen to fly a Drake.

Thanks very much for your comments :) Yeah its just the slanted engines/wings that bring it closer to the Drake, plus the engines are more connected to the newer Scorpion battleship. I think the over all design though fits closely to the Caldari style.

Thanks again! I think I'd like to fly this with two Drake's flying escort (like they're personal drones ;)

Totally reminds me of the SSV Normandy for some reason! Great work!

Kind of looks like a Systems Alliance ship; a very futuristic Normandy.

Thanks, a few have stated that as well, though it was based on a quick top down pen sketch of mine..and more based on the premise to look good alongside the Drake battlecruiser from an MMO I used to play 'EVE Online'.. I think my ship would be a bit bigger than the Normandy but no idea about how big that one is :)

SO sexy! How did you make it, it seems as if you use a 3d software but then again.....you could probably draw that, im so confused :D.

Thanks for that :) I made it using Google SketchUp - though its the first time I made anything in it, and hadn't used a 3d application since the Drake Ends wallpaper, so it turned out well in the end.
I just took a screenshot in SketchUp (can save a screenshot high res using SketchUP, but not a render.. render software is separate and costs). Then I painted over the screenshot in Photoshop Elements 7 :) Given time it would be better to just texture the ship properly but I chose what I thought was the quickest way..

I think I prefer to make a 3d base instead of drawing a basis for an image (at least the last couple of times) it saves me stuffing up dimensions just drawing and using my noggin.

Holy :O thats amazing. Never thought of using sketchup that way before, used it mainly for buildings and such. I take it you used a tablet to draw and it took you a few hours ? I really wish i could do this kind of renders one day, concept spaceships is like..my favorite thing, especially if it has a bit of drake in in. Also, how did you make the plates, line tool or just "click shift click" ?

Definitely amongst the best entries in the EvE-o starship design contest and definitely the best Caldari design I've seen so far.

Even though I find ACXtreme's feedback very interesting and would love to see something like that in the commentary area beneath pictures in my gallery, I still have to disagree with him on the point of the Lammergeier's design not being very Caldari because of the use of sections. Several Caldari frigates, at least one cruiser hull (Caracal) and one battleship design has them too (the Scorpion is clearly build from 2 sections, a massive wing with scorpion-tail style rear section attached on top of it). What I see in this design is strong influence from Drake & Scorpion (the wings) and Rokh (the mid-section), how much more Caldari could it be?

"Lights - Too much lights ... unlike amarr, I'v never seen caldari use lights. I think there might be few on a titan but that's that..."

How about the belly of the Cormorant...? :P

Thank you Spessulle :)
All good points and the Rokh element is the most obvious. Given the time again I might have made it it differently (the Rokh like front block section).. though that could be said for everything I have done. Bah, I like it as it is :)

I had completely forgotten about the Cormorant and all those pretty lights moving around. It was a nice touch that should have gone on more Caldari ships.

Originally I put the lights on the Lammergeier because it was going through a 'sea fog' like nebula.. the wreck wasn't originally burning .. it worked but it was far too subtle. Added stars and fire and the fog aspect dissipated after that.

I agree, not sure what else I could have done (apart from putting the Caldari logo on it) to make it more Caldari.

Thanks again Spessulle

Your design is awesome, but it just doesn't feel EVEish, I do however agree that compared to some of the ships already in a game, yours looks like a dream-cake.
Don't take it harsh, but I just can't fit your ship to caldari race (or any other one, for that matter).

Here's my more in depth analysis, because after reading your forum topic in EVE-online forums, I think you at least deserve that, also from my past experience (and bad burns), maybe there's something in my comment that can help you approve your ship in the next contest (I got a feeling you wont attend any ccp contests, but there are other contests you may want to take part in)

Analysis:
Shape - Caldari ships are mostly sculpted out of a single massive piece, your ships has 3 sections. The only race that uses "sections" on their ships are minmatar and even they don't use them too much. Also the design is too outward for caldari... I have noticed they don't use parts that are loosely connected to the ship. (again like minmatar do).

Symmetricality - All caldari ships tend to go off that path. Yours is symmetrical like amarr.

Edges - caldari ships have sharp edges (unlike gallente)... you have done that part well : )

Colors - The textures (take a look at the rokh [link]) Your armor plating reminds of gallente stile with sharper edges, but the plating fits together too well for caldari. I have noticed that caldari use more of a plate on a plate stile. Yes there are sections of armor, but they are much simpler in complexity and looks like plates are stacked on top of more plates (like the topside of the raven etc).

Engines - love em... I think their done right

Lights - Too much lights ... unlike amarr, I'v never seen caldari use lights. I think there might be few on a titan but that's that...

Guns - ok

Misc - I like how all the 928m of ship feel like it's big. That means it has enough details and isn't oversized.
But yeah... I just can't fit it to any of the races... it's shaped like minmatar... textured like gallente/amarr with caldari colors. Overall looks like nothing seen in eve before.

I hope it helps a bit

Thank you ACXtreme for your critical analysis :) Its very constructive, and I thank you for doing it. It makes great sense to me - a true breath of fresh air!
I'll have to disagree that it wouldn't suit EVE Online along side other Caldari ships... but of course that's my own desire to see it in the game and play with it. Like I have said in a forum posting - maybe I'd like to see more of a common/tranditional design to ships in the EVE universe... but I do understand that is part of what sets EVE Online apart from other sci-fi games and media... and there is the problem :) Also for CCP to gather more newer players to EVE they might need to adapt their ships to satisfy that need. I don't know..

One point though, the Drake - completely Symmetrical as far as I can see it. I pretty much made the Lammergeier to go along with the Drake.. I enjoyed playing with the Drake more than the Raven since it looked better, but of course the power is with the Raven and had to play with it.

Guns wise, the placement is off on the top of the main mid structure.. was more of an after thought, just didn't want to put all the guns along the sides. I wish there were more guns on EVE ships, and more different types than just been long range or short range.. missiles etc .. I'd like a heap of everything. A friend commented when he saw the ship that it didn't have many guns on it - thats a non-EVE player perspective..

I did have some ideas for a Raven upgraded version but after the EVE Online forum posts I may make and post it later.. though probably not as a player.

Thanks again and good fortune in the competition :)

Same, I haven't received any response from CCP and I doubt I will. I canceled my accounts with them so I think thats just fair - treat me like sh#t then no money for them.

I'd pilot this ship in a heartbeat. I like the central fuselage with the wings angled down from there. And of course it's bristling with weaponry. I'd make it a smaller ship though -- maybe cruiser class.

As long as it got in game :) ... still like the idea of been able to submitted custom ships (with stock standard abilities you have to pick from) into EVE for a price - though seeing how CCP stuffed up a simple website submission contest - I reckon it would be impossible for them to do.

Gives me no pleasure to say it :(

Never saw this one durring the contest, but she is a nice looking ship. And all Caldari ships look similar-it comes from them being ISO standard.

Thanks j99450 :) Yeah I really don't understand why some are saying this ship looks too similar to some of the other Caldari when that is part of the point of conforming to racial design.

I don't know, I like the Lammergeier, pity I'll never be able to play it for real. :(

I`m still like this design. And it became better, i see.
Curious, why it was not chosen to semis...It`s not realy good practice to compare creative works (IMHO), but i`m sure your ship deserves to be there more then few others.
